amazed and slightly jealous

i don’t keep any paper records of anything financial. no bank statements, receipts, tax returns, credit card statements, or bills. everything is electronic. i have no savings, no retirement plan, and no investments. each month, i spend everything in my bank account. i literally take out the last twenty dollars the day before i get paid.

when i tell people this, depending on who they are, they either look incredulous and slightly ill, or amazed and slightly jealous (remember the EZ form?).

depending on the story i tell myself, i am either a clutter-free pioneer who, due to my naive trust in the universe, is happily oblivious to the fact that i am strolling a hundred miles in the air while whatever is under my feet seems to be desintegrating after i pass and reconstructing itself in front of me seconds before my next step, or i am a child in perpetual self-exile from the world of responsible adulthood.

clearly, i prefer the former, so i try to spin the story that way whenever possible.
